Carnival in Modena

Carnival in Modena is celebrated on Fat Thursday (or Shrove Thursday, or Jeudi gras) afternoon: today!
At noon, the center is filled with young and old people in their carnival costumes, waiting for the procession of masks, marching bands and majorettes that starts from the train station and ends in Piazza Grande.

Arriving in a horse-drawn carriage, the Pavorinica family will go up to the balcony of the Town Hall and, facing the Piazza Grande, will make their speech (lo sproloquio, the rant) in strict Modenese dialect.

Sandrone, his wife Pulonia and their son Sgorghiguelo are the commedia dell’arte characters of Modena.
But we will talk about that another time: now it is time to celebrate!
